"When you can't think of something scary to do, when you can't think of a good way to set an atmosphere, you simply have something quickly lurch out at the camera, accompanied by an absolutely deafening orchestra sting. And you leap out of your chair and think 'oh God, that's scary!!'. Here's the thing though: it's not scary. It's startling.
That's not horror. That is just me grabbing your ear and yelling in it very loudly. That doesn't take any talent. There is only a certain amount of times you can do a jumpscare before it becomes irritating. In those cases you're not scared of the movie(/game/etc.) – you're simply scared of the loud noises. You go into a movie(/game/etc.) and you KNOW there's gonna be another loud noise and you know you're gonna jump again. When I yell into your ear, you're gonna be pissed! If I kept doing it, you'd be pissed off!"
