A Thought: I Wonder How Many People Are Playing My SNES Games…

Hey everyone,

Today I caught myself thinking about something kind of random but nice:
I wonder how many people out there are playing my little SNES games.

I’m not actually trying to find out numbers or stats — that’s not really the point.
It’s more like a feeling, an idea that makes me smile. Just imagining that maybe someone, somewhere, even for a few minutes, is having fun with something I created… it’s a pretty great thought.

I don’t know if this happens to any of you, but sometimes I like to imagine my work reaching someone out there, even if I never know about it.
Just wanted to share that thought.

I know what you mean. Back in the 90s, a friend and I programmed stacks of C64 games and distributed them worldwide via our in-house public domain service by mail. Thirty years later, I occasionally browse websites on Google that offer C64 software for download... and I'm delighted to see every game I programmed myself pop up on such sites.

This is basically the point of most creative things we do. Trying to make someone's life a bit more worthwhile because they like what they get from it. The 'what' is vastly diverse, sometimes it's just useful information, sometimes it triggers emotions, sometimes it's fun or spurs ambition.

Often times there can also be a second thought in there similar to proselytizing: when I like something and created a derived work for myself in the beginning I think it's worth to share it with others because they might like it, too.

Ich schätze, dass SNES-Homebrew doch eine ziemliche Nische ist. Die meisten Leute nutzen wahrscheinlich nicht mal mehr die frei verfügbaren Emulatoren, sondern setzen auf die offiziellen Wiederveröffentlichungen. Das mag für die alten Original-Spiele funktionieren, aber es schränkt eben auch den Nutzerkreis für Homebrew ein.
Allerdings bin ich mir ziemlich sicher, dass es genügend Fans und Bastler gibt, die sich über solche Eigenproduktionen freuen. Ich selbst nutze ja auch gerne noch meine Original-Hardware. Und wenn man da über eine Flashcard-Lösung mal ein neues Spiel ausprobieren kann, ist das immer wieder erfrischend .

I really hope that once my new game is ready, you’ll get to try it out on your original console. Seeing it run on real hardware would be amazing, and knowing someone is playing it through a flashcart makes the whole effort feel even more worthwhile.
