In 1990 the world was graced by the Super Nintendo Entertainment System (well Japan anyways, it wasnt until `92 that europe was given the machine) followed shortly by one of the greatest games ever created, Super Mario Kart.
This game was responsible for many a blistered thumb and countless premature deaths of SNES pads. It was like a burst of sunshine to the racing genre, pitting you against your favourite Nintendo characters with alot of BigN magic thrown in.
Of course racing against Mario and the gang was good fun but it was the great balance of power-ups, short-cuts, perfect control and, most importantly, the 2 player games that proved irresistible to gamers, battle mode being especialy high on the list of must plays.
Many who enjoyed SMK maintain that it is the definitive version of the series, we wait with baited breath to see wether the upcoming Gamecube iteration can honour its memory well or even eclipse the granddaddy of them all.
The GBA version Mario Kart :Super Circuit is very close to the SNES game in terms of gameplay and is a very strong recomendation, it also features the orignal tracks from SMK too!
If you've never played the original, justify your existence now, go get it!
